Special Gas Systems Empower Physical and Chemical Analysis in Laboratories

Introduction

The physical and chemical analysis industry serves as a core pillar for scientific research, innovation, and quality control, providing services to universities, research and teaching institutions, as well as industries such as biopharmaceuticals, analytical testing, food safety, inspection and testing, and petrochemicals. The stable operation of precision analytical instruments—such as gas chromatography (GC), atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS), and inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES)—relies heavily on a continuous and stable supply of high-purity gases. Specialty gas systems (specialty gas supply systems) provide laboratories with centralized, standardized gas delivery infrastructure. They encompass the entire process—from gas source storage, manifold switching, and pressure regulation to pipeline transportation, terminal distribution, and safety monitoring—and are critical systems for ensuring the accuracy of analytical data and the safety of laboratory operations.

Specific Applications of Special Gas Systems in the Physical and Chemical Analysis Industry

1. Busbar-Based Centralized Gas Supply and Multi-Mode Switching

Gases used in physical and chemical analysis laboratories are characterized by high demands for continuous supply and a dispersed distribution of usage points. The specialty gas system employs a manifold-based centralized supply architecture, in which multiple gas cylinders are connected in parallel to the manifold, ensuring uninterrupted gas supply through a dual-cylinder (or multi-cylinder) switching device. The system supports three switching modes: manual, semi-automatic, and fully automatic: In fully automatic mode, when the pressure of the active cylinder drops to a preset threshold, the system automatically switches to the standby cylinder while triggering a low-pressure alarm. This ensures the continuous supply of carrier gases and fuel gases—such as helium (He), nitrogen (N₂), hydrogen (H₂), and argon (Ar)—and prevents analysis interruptions caused by cylinder replacement.

2. 316 Stainless Steel Piping and Gas Purity Assurance

Analytical instruments have extremely high requirements for gas purity; even trace amounts of contamination can cause baseline drift, increased detection limits, or even instrument damage. The specialty gas system’s delivery piping is constructed entirely of 316 stainless steel, and all connecting components—such as valves and fittings—are made of the same material, forming a closed-loop, clean delivery pathway from the gas source to the end-use point. 316 stainless steel offers excellent corrosion resistance and low adsorption, effectively reducing gas adsorption and residue on the pipe walls and preventing reactive gases such as hydrogen (H₂) and acetylene (C₂H₂) from reacting with the piping material. A stainless steel control panel is installed at the gas source, integrating pressure regulation, filtration, and shut-off functions to ensure the stability and purity of the output gas.

3. Multi-Level Security Monitoring and Alarm System

Laboratory gas safety is a core consideration in the design of specialty gas systems. The system is equipped with low-pressure alarms that monitor gas source pressure in real time and issue timely warnings when cylinder pressure is low. Additionally, a concentration alarm monitoring system is deployed to monitor the real-time concentrations of flammable and explosive gases—such as hydrogen (H₂) and acetylene (C₂H₂)—as well as toxic gases; if a leak causes the concentration to reach a threshold, audible and visual alarms are immediately triggered. Some systems are also integrated with exhaust ventilation and emergency shut-off valves to enable automatic leak response. This dual-layer protection—combining pressure monitoring and concentration monitoring—ensures the safety of laboratory personnel and equipment.

4. Standardization of Gas Cylinder Rooms and Gas Supply Management

The specialty gas system employs a centralized management model in the cylinder room, physically separating the gas storage area from the experimental operation area, thereby significantly enhancing the safety of the gas station. Cylinders are stored in the cylinder room according to gas properties, with flammable gases (such as hydrogen H₂ and acetylene C₂H₂) and oxidizing gases (such as oxygen O₂ and nitrous oxide N₂O) arranged in separate zones. The room is equipped with explosion-proof electrical systems, ventilation and exhaust systems, and fire protection facilities. Safety accessories, including cylinder mounting devices, anti-tip chains, and gas caps, are fully provided. Gas supply lines are routed from the cylinder room into the laboratory through wall-penetrating sleeves, ensuring standardized and regulated management of the gas supply source.

5. Custom Design and Collaborative Construction

The piping layout in physical and chemical analysis laboratories is complex, with multiple gas circuits crisscrossing one another. Based on the laboratory’s actual environment, WoFei Technology collaborated with the construction team to develop a design plan. Designers precisely marked the intersection points of each gas line and the locations of control valves on the drawings to prevent errors and omissions. The detailed and meticulous design allows for precise calculation of material requirements, thereby shortening the construction timeline. The construction process strictly adheres to SEMI standards and relevant specifications. Piping is welded using fully automated rail welding, resulting in smooth, oxidation-free inner walls at the weld joints. Prior to system handover, helium mass spectrometry leak testing and purging and replacement are performed to ensure the system meets airtightness and cleanliness standards.
